Dinosaurs and Strawberry Pie

tumblr_mcsf8cB7A21rcxk0xo1_500As a kid I was fascinated by the construction of Dinny the Dinosaur, a 150-ton building shaped like a larger-than-life-sized Apatosaurus.  It took creator Claude Bell 11 years to build Dinny! Our family’s out-of-town trips weren’t very frequent so I was able to see biannual snapshots of the progress of Dinny’s construction. A second dinosaur, Mr. Rex, was constructed near Dinny in 1981. That construction moved along quicker, at only five years to build 🙂

On family trips, the dinosaurs weren’t the only highlights. Stopping at the Wheel Inn for fresh strawberry pie was always a must!

The Wheel Inn used big, ripe and sweet strawberries and the pie crust was buttery and flaky—with the edges having just the right amount of crunchy browning.

Till the day I die, Dinosaurs and Strawberry Pie will always go together…

Alas, I am not (yet) an expert pie baker. Anyone care to share a favorite pie recipe?
